Amanda Brugel
Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a tiny sleepy town. It is a part of the island that has been called "the West Island." West Island has a lot of different communities. Many who've never known about it may mistake it for a separate island facing west. Amanda Brugel is said to be born on the West Island, although it's not the case. Brugel grew on Courtice just outside Oshawa in Ontario. Her first ambition was to be a dancer. Then, a growth rate increased her height and she outgrew every dance partner she had. In an interview with Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet, 1 inch." When I outgrew my male partners I stopped. Dancers who have been in the past often switch to acting, and in the instance of Brugel,, it was a suggestion from her teacher of drama. The teacher who suggested she go after a role in the school's annual production. After trying out the role, she was chosen as the main character of Anne of Green Gables. When she was awarded the Fine Arts Talent Scholarship, she attended York University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the year 2000. In the 20+ years since, Brugel has been offered roles in more than 60 productions on the big and small screens. She attracted the most attention when she landed the part of Rita in the award-winning television series The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel is the sole Canadian on the season 1 cast of the show as well as appearing only on occasion, was the sole Canadian.
